I read with interest the setting up of a panel of experts to investigate how modern technology can help the maritime freight industry flourish. Amongst proposals to be considered are the exciting prospects of autonomous ships and digital ports.
The Trade Secretary, Chris Grayling, announced the formation of the expert team who will work in unison with the industry to ensure Britain remains at the forefront of global shipping in the future.

I recently spotted a post that amused me. It was on the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce website, of all places, and was from a company called Millennium Cargo Services Ltd.
They had the relatively straightforward task of shipping a container to the United States. It arrived safely enough and was selected for a random customs check. This is standard procedure and nothing unusual.

I noted that the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released data for global air freight markets for January 2018 and they make very encouraging reading.
Demand, measured in freight tonne kilometers (FTKs), rose 8% in January compared with the same time last year. This also showed an increase from the 5.8% annual growth recorded for December 2017.
